Just after the implementation of the new larger most viewed thumbnails(below), Youtube has given us another major freeze. Over 6 days now and still frozen. Great for those videos stuck in the Top 20, Unfortunate for the ones that where lined up for honors.
The Global Freeze – Youtube’s most viewed frozen
At this point, Youtube’s Most Viewed are frozen everywhere. The screenshot below shows today’s most viewed of “the America’s”, with the top video having been uploaded 1 week ago. We are still speculating whether or not Youtube is changing the entire most viewed scenario or we are experiencing Microsoft scale BUGS.
Youtube’s Most Viewed Back To The Roots?
Back in the very beginnings of Youtube, there was only one most viewed list: The Global/Worldwide list. It wasn’t for long and Youtube’s growth quickly called for regional Youtubes. Early on, you had to chose the country settings, but eventually they automatically detected your country through your IP and you where watching a say UK set up. The most viewed charts however weren’t compiled by what was hot in the UK. No! What you needed to get into the most viewed was a UK channel and a lot of views. Where these views were from was irrelevant. Sounds flawed. Sure it is. However, that’s the way it has now benn for a while. Back to the beginnings or a big fat bug?
Indian Soaps in the Most Viewed
Whether the current most viewed scenario is a bug or not, it does explain the invasion of indian soaps into the most viewed. They are simply showing up because of the amount of global views they get, not because of UK views.  All of them are hosted in a UK channel. That explains it.

Youtube counts even less views now!
You would think that when you have 10 people watching your video you get 10 views. That unfortunately is not the case. Under some conditions you may end up gaining just 1 view from ten visits to your video. One can only wonder why that is. Common opinion is that it is to keep the view spammers at bay, but isn’t that solution hurting everyone?!  If I was zynical I would say that less views decrease the massive payouts Youtube delivers to partners and copyright holders, but that would be evil;-(
Youtube’s Most Viewed being refurbished again
Here we go again, in some countries there is as little as 1 page and 7 videos in the most viewed categories like the screenshot below for the Netherlands show. In the UK Youtube shows mostly 3-4 pages. Clearly, a lot of videos are currently being omitted. We have yet to understand this algorithm change, although we believe that this change is more of a bug. What you can see is that videos are now ranked by general views. It starts with the most viewed and then decreases in a linear way. You can see how it used to be in this screenshot) This means they are ranked by global plays.  In the past videos would be ranked by UK views and would show the global views, hence a clip would be in position 5 showing 300k views yet the video in position 3 would show only 20k views. The video in position 5 simply had fewer UK views then the on in 3, hence it ranks lower. This has currently changed.

Another pre-roll ad makes the most viewed after video has been online for a week
To keep the most viewed of today fresh, Youtube’s algorithm doesn’t allow videos into the most viewed of today category after 48hours online. Sometimes big name brands happen to break this rule conviniently, with todays cornetto commercial in the Top 20 after having been uploaded a week ago. How does it get there? Well, here and there the pre-roll ads magically take on a life of their own and make it into the most viewed. You can identify these by the fact that they are no longer then 30 seconds.
Strange bug or Youtube selling out again?
This Evian ad has suddenly appeared in the most viewed. Having been uploaded 5 days ago, it should not be in the most viewed. It hasn’t been there yesterday.
Youtube Frozen for Days – Longest Freeze in 4 Years
Youtube’s Most Viewed says “updated every 4 hours”! Well, lately that’s not been happening. In the last 4 days Youtube’s most viewed were updated exactly zero times. However, those videos currently stuck in the freeze are happy about the extreme exposure! Normally a position in the most viewed don’t last longer then 48 hours!
We may see a nother major update at the other side of this freeze. Hope it’s worth it!
Digital War! Youtube Removes Most Viewed Category to Avoid Qur’an(Koran) Burning Videos?
A number of Qur’an burning videos have been uploaded to Youtube including Youtube’s no 1 most viewed globally in its Youtube Charts. Coincidentally Youtube has removed all most viewed categories, possibly to avoid repercussions or simply to avoid giving these videos extra exposure. The videos feature thousands of war like comments, talking about killing and torturing each other. ( Some less aggressive ones are below)
 Is this just the dark side of social media, or do we have indeed the first digital war?
The most viewed videos are still visible via the iPhone Youtube application.
“Most Viewed” Chaos – All listings disappeared.
Yes today all most viewed listings have disappeared. Instead of videos all we see is white space. I smell another update, another change that won’t please anyone. The only page not affected is the music page.
